Sjogren's syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by lymphocytic infiltration of exocrine glands and a 43-fold greater risk for lymphoma development. This condition may occur as an isolated disorder, or in association with other rheumatic diseases. This study investigates the role of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) lytic protein p17, an inhibitor of apoptosis, in the pathology of SS. Using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, a small subset (18-40%) of rheumatic patients, regardless of SS status, was found to have an elevated immune response to p17, compared to healthy individuals.
