The structural design of power transmission lines requires knowledge from a variety of widely-dispersed expert sources. This thesis demonstrates how an expert system can be efficiently used to assemble and organize this knowledge in order to design a wide range of transmission line models and realistically estimate their costs. This thesis presents LIDE ("Line Intelligent Development Environment"), a concrete example of an expert system for the preliminary structural design of power transmission lines and it explains how rules and objects can be used to integrate the design criteria that come from various knowledge domains.
