The anaerobic digestion (AD) of the organic fraction (OFMSW) of municipal solid waste (MSW) is a sustainable and environmentally interesting solution as compared to landfilling. Anaerobic digestion operated under mesophilic temperatures degrades only a fraction of the complex compounds found in OFMSW, whereas under higher temperatures, such as thermophilic and hyperthermophilic, the degradation could be more extensive.
