Meningococcal disease is a severe acute infectious disease caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis (aka meningococcus). The infectious agent affects mainly children and young adults. Neisseria meningitidis belongs to a specific class of pathogens, accidental pathogens, since the disease results in the death of both the host and the infectious agent. Epidemics of meningococcal disease happen sporadically, in small clusters, and disease incidence has been reported from all the European countries. Since 1999, a surveillance network for meningococcal disease is monitoring the activity of the infectious agent in 17 of these countries.
