Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a cell surface protein attached to the membrane by a glycophosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor, a common modification of cell surface proteins. CEA is overexpressed in many human cancers, and plays a role in tumor progression through its ability to activate certain integrins, thereby blocking cellular differentiation, inhibiting anoikis, and disrupting normal tissue architecture.
