The role of hydrocarbons in the Witwatersrand gold and uranium deposits, and the genesis of the Witwatersrand-style Black Reef deposits, South Africa

Hydrocarbons are a common constituent of many mineral deposits and are associated directly with high-grade mineralization. In the deposits of the Witwatersrand Basin (South Africa), the focus of this research, hydrocarbon seams are associated with over 40 % of the gold and 95 % of the uranium that has been produced. Although this association is widely known, the roles of the hydrocarbons in the ore-forming process are not fully understood.The metalliferous nature of hydrocarbons and their role(s) in the ore-forming process of the Witwatersrand are evaluated in this thesis in three studies using gold-, uranium- and pyrobitumen-bearing samples of the Carbon Leader Reef. In the first study, mineral-free pyrobitumen seams were investigated at a micro to nano scale, and yielded evidence for the in situ growth of uraninite and anatase nanocrystals that are pervasively distributed in the pyrobitumen matrix. Uraninite nanocrystals grew to complex-shaped nanocrystal aggregates due to oriented attachment, in which anatase generally provided the nuclei for the growth of uraninite. The second study examined large uraninite grains enclosed in pyrobitumen. High-resolution scanning and transmitted electron microscopic imaging showed that the large grains are in fact spongy aggregates of nanocrystals. Gold inclusions were discovered filling pores in the uraninite grains and were shown in turn to contain inclusions of small fossil oil droplets that had been thermally converted into pyrobitumen. The thin pyrobitumen layers on the pore walls of the gold grains carry in situ formed uraninite nanocrystals within their organic matrix. Lanarkite was first discovered in the Witwatersrand and is restricted to local oxidation-zones between galena and uraninite interfaces. A third study was undertaken to investigate the origin of hydrocarbons in the Carbon Leader Reef, their metalliferous nature and the timing of metal charging and discharging. Large similarities were detected in the trace element composition of pyrobitumen and that of potential source rock shales in the lower units of the Witwatersrand Supergroup. The pyrobitumen is exceptionally rich in uranium, gold and trace elements that are associated with uraninite and native gold, confirming the presence of ubiquitous and evenly distributed uraninite nanocrystals and micro-sized gold inclusions in the pyrobitumen. Based on the findings of these three studies, a genetic model for the formation of uranium and gold ore by water-oil-emulsions was developed and progressively refined. According to this model, pre-existing U-Ti minerals were dissolved in circulating oils, and metals were transported to the ore horizon(s) until thermal degradation immobilized the hydrocarbons by solidifying them as pyrobitumen, releasing uranium and titanium that are held in solution as nanocrystals. Gold-bearing hydrothermal fluids infiltrated into the reef during post-depositional regional metamorphism. In contact with immiscible oil phases, they formed a water-oil-emulsion and gold precipitated from the water due to reduction by the oil droplets. The trapped oil droplets in gold were also converted to pyrobitumen and small amounts of uraninite nanocrystals were released. The radiogenic decay of uraninite and the presence of pore water facilitated the formation of small amounts of lanarkite, curite and galena.The fourth study focuses on the origin and formation of gold and uranium ore in the Black Reef, its genetic relationship to the Witwatersrand reefs and the role of hydrothermal fluids. Results of the study show that the gold and uranium deposition occurred during regional metamorphism when hydrothermal fluids recycled gold and uranium from the underlying Witwatersrand reefs and concentrated them in the Black Reef conglomerates. The concentration of both metals was chemically triggered due to the interaction of hydrothermal fluids with pyrite and pyrobitumen.Dans les dépôts minéraux du bassin de Witwatersrand (Afrique du Sud), objet principal de cette recherche, les gisements d'hydrocarbures sont associés à plus de 40 % de l'or et 95 % de l'uranium produits, mais les rôles des hydrocarbures dans le processus de formation du minerai restent partiellement inexpliqués. Les rôle(s) des hydrocarbures dans le processus de formation du minerai du Witwatersrand sont évalués dans cette thèse dans trois études faisant appel à des échantillons aurifères, des échantillons contenant de l'uranium et du pyrobitume, issus du Carbon Leader Reef. Dans la première étude, des gisements de pyrobitume sans minéraux ont été étudiés aux échelles micro et nano et ont mis en évidence la croissance in situ de nanocristaux d'uraninite et d'anatase répartis de façon homogène dans la matrice de pyrobitume. Les nanocristaux d'uraninite ont formé des agrégats à forme complexe, due à une fixation orientée, où l'anatase représente généralement le noyau de croissance de l'uraninite. La seconde étude et porte sur les grosses granules d'uraninite incluses dans le pyrobitume. Un balayage à haute résolution, une imagerie microscopique électronique à transmission ont montré que les grosses granules étaient en réalité des agrégats spongieux de nano-cristaux. On a découvert que des inclusions d'or remplissaient des pores des granules d'uraninite et qu'elles contenaient à leur tour de petites gouttelettes de pétrole fossile transformées en pyrobitume par action thermique. Les fines couches de pyrobitume sur les parois des pores des grains d'or portent des nano-cristaux d'uraninite formés in situ à l'intérieur de leur matrice organique.Une troisième étude a été entreprise afin d'étudier les origines des hydrocarbures dans le Carbon Leader Reef, ainsi que leur nature métallifère et la cadence des charges et décharges de métal. On a observé de grandes similitudes dans la composition en oligoéléments du pyrobitume et celle de la source potentielle de schiste dans les unités inférieures du groupe secondaire du Witwatersrand. Le pyrobitume est exceptionnellement riche en uranium, or et oligoéléments associés à l'uraninite et l'or natif, confirmant ainsi la présence de nanocristaux d'uraninite omniprésents et répartis de façon homogène, ainsi que de micro-inclusions d'or dans le pyrobitume. Les résultats de ces trois études ont permis de mettre au point et d'affiner progressivement un modèle génétique de formation de minerai d'uranium et d'or par émulsions eau/pétrole. Selon ce modèle, durant la circulation du pétrole, les minéraux U-Ti préexistants ont été dissouts dans les huiles et les métaux ont été transportés vers les horizons minéralisés jusqu'à ce que la dégradation thermique immobilise les hydrocarbures et les solidifie sous forme de pyrobitume, libérant l'uranium et le titane contenus dans les solutions sous forme de nanocristaux. Les fluides hydrothermaux aurifères se sont infiltrés dans le filon pendant la métamorphose régionale post-sédimentation. Au contact des phases huileuses non miscibles, ils ont formé une émulsion eau/huile, et l'or a précipité à partir de l'eau en raison de la réduction opérée par les gouttelettes d'huile. Les gouttelettes d'huiles piégées dans l'or ont été également converties en pyrobitume, et de petites quantités de nanocristaux d'uraninite ont été libérées.La quatrième étude se concentre sur l'origine et la formation des minerais d'or et d'uranium dans le Black Reef, sa relation génétique avec les filons du Witwatersrand, et sur le rôle des liquides hydrothermaux. Les résultats de l'étude montrent que la sédimentation d'or et d'uranium survient durant la métamorphose régionale, lorsque les liquides hydrothermaux recyclent l'or et l'uranium depuis les filons souterrains du Witwatersrand. Dans le cas des deux métaux, la concentration est déclenchée chimiquement par l'interaction des fluides hydrothermaux avec la pyrite et le pyrobitume
