Suicide is an important societal burden, yet our ability to prevent it remains insufficient and our understanding of its etiology requires further research. The most commonly accepted and consistently supported model explaining suicidal behaviour is the stress-diathesis model. Moreover, there is robust evidence for a heritability of particular traits of suicide vulnerability that are transmitted separately from comorbid psychopathologies like depression. An endophenotypic approach to studying suicidal behaviour could allow a better understanding of its familial transmission, and support findings from the study of suicide attempters.
