PKR-like endoplasmic reticulum (ER) kinase (PERK), an ER transmembrane Ser/Thr protein kinase, is part of the unfolded protein response (UPR) and a key regulator of pancreatic β cell function and homeostasis. PERK phosphorylates the eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2) on its α subunit at Ser51 leading to attenuation of translation in stress conditions. Previously, we showed that the adaptor protein Nck1 modulates translation by directly interacting with the β subunit of eIF2 and assembling a phosphatase complex that dephosphorylates eIF2αSer51.
