The Dominion of Canada and the United States of America, together comprising over 85 per cent of the total area of the North American continent, occupy the most unique position of all the countries of the world, in that they are separated by a boundary of over 3,000 miles, stretching across the entire width of the.continent, terminated on the East by the Atlantic Ocean and by the Pacific Ocean on the West. A cursory glance at a map of the physical features of north America will show that the boundary itself for the most part is a political rather than a geographical division.
