In order to make this thesis reasonably complete and yet keep within prescribed limits of space, it was considered best not to include any theorems on invariant factors of pairs of quadratic forms, on quadratic differential forms, or on quadratic forms in an infinite number of variables. Although the results included are for the most part well known, some of the proofs are new.
