The architectonic subdivision of the mammalian cerebral cortex : including a report of electrical stimulation of one hundred and five human cerebral cortices

At the present time, the work of Brodmann and the Vogts, and of Economo has placed human cerebral cortical architectonics on a fairly sound basis. In spite of the prediction of the Vogts that two hundred areas will be identified, the one hundred and nine now recognized seem to be sufficient for practical purposes. Beyond that, however, we cannot go in human research. The investigations of the neurophysiologists on the results of extirpations and stimulations in the lower mammals have not been met by comparable strides in the study of human material. This is exactly as it would be expected. The unique opportunity to investigate the results of the removals summarized in the following chapters as well as the study of their exact location by architectonic methods is, therefore, most unusual. The good fortune of being permitted to analyse and summarize the results of human cortical stimulation in a clinic such as the Montreal Neurological Institute is truly without parallel on this continent. The conclusions drawn must perforce be temporary in several many, instances. For from an absolute standpoint, the number of cases is still small. They are presented, however, in the belief that an erroneous opinion based on existing knowledge is better than no opinion at all
