Vestibular afferents act as encoding channels that transmit self-motion information detected by sensory organs in the vestibular labyrinths to central neurons in the brainstem and cerebellum. A striking characteristic of these neurons is the heterogeneity in the spike-timing variability of their spontaneous activity.
