The effect of landscape structure on insect herbivory and biodiversity: Implications for forest ecosystem services in the Monteregie, Québec

Anthropogenic disturbances are fragmenting forested areas around the world, fundamentally changing the structure of landscapes in a manner that has poorly understood consequences for biodiversity, ecological processes, and ecosystem services. This lack of understanding makes it difficult for land managers to make optimal decisions that balance environmental benefits and costs of land use change. In this thesis, I address this gap in our understanding by using a combination of theoretical and empirical approaches to quantify how and when fragmentation affects ecosystem processes that have distinct impacts on forest ecosystem services. Specifically, I test the role that insect herbivory plays in mediating the effects of landscape structure on ecosystem services in forest ecosystems in the Montégerie in southwest Quebec. Insect herbivory is a good model system to test these effects because it is sensitive to landscape structure, can have strong effects on ecosystem services, and can be either beneficial or harmful depending on the herbivore species and the ecosystem context. In this thesis, I quantify the effects of landscape structure on insect herbivory and biodiversity, and assesses the implications of these effects for forest ecosystem services in four steps: 1) In the second chapter examine the known relationships between landscape structure, herbivory and ecosystem services through a semi-quantitative literature review and show that herbivory plays an important role mediating effects of connectivity on ecosystem services. The results of this review show assessing the mechanisms that regulate the response of insect herbivores to landscape structure would allow for better predictions regarding this process. 2) In the third chapter, I quantify the relationship between landscape structure and herbivory, and test potential mechanisms (i.e. predation pressure) driving the response, using a manipulative field experiment in the Montérégie. I find that landscape structure alone does not explain levels of herbivory, even though there was strong vertebrate predation pressure on herbivores that varied with landscape structure. Because these results show structure at the landscape scale does not explain patterns of herbivory, my next step was to determine whether insect herbivory is spatially heterogeneous at a finer scale. 3) In the fourth chapter, I measure the spatial heterogeneity of insect herbivory in remnant forest patches at both the landscape and patch level, quantifying herbivore damage on sugar maple trees at the edge, interior, and canopy of remnant forest patches that differ in size and connectivity. I find that patterns of herbivory are affected by the interaction of landscape and patch level sources of spatial heterogeneity. 4) Finally, to better understand the mechanism by which these finer scale patterns occur, I measure the effects of landscape structure and location within a forest patch (i.e., edge, interior, canopy) on arthropod functional and taxonomic biodiversity. I find that canopies of fragmented forest patches are important reservoirs of arthropod biodiversity, even in fragmented forest ecosystems. Human activities, such as fragmentation or restoration, continue to affect the structure of forest ecosystems, with unknown consequences for the ecosystem services provided by forests. My thesis advances our understanding of the effects of landscape structure on ecosystem services by using herbivory as a model system to provide a conceptual framework with which to balance the social and environmental costs and benefits associated with altering landscape structure.Les perturbations anthropogéniques causent la fragmentation des forets à travers le monde, modifiant leur structure et ayant des impacts méconnus sur la biodiversité, les processus écologiques et les services écosystémiques. Ce manque de connaissances complique la tâche des gestionnaires dont les décisions doivent à la fois bénéficier l’environnement et permettent des changements d’utilisation du paysage. Cette thèse vise à combler ce manque de connaissance. En combinant une approche théorique et empirique, j’ai quantifié les effets de la fragmentation forestière sur les processus écologiques entrant en jeu dans les services rendus par les écosystèmes forestiers. Plus précisément, j’ai testé le rôle de l’herbivorie par les insectes dans la médiation des effets de la structure du paysage sur les services écosystémiques en Montérégie (Québec). L’herbivorie par les insectes constitue un bon modèle de recherche afin de mesurer ces effets car elle est sensible aux changements de structure du paysage et peut avoir un impact—bénéfique ou nuisible—important sur les services selon les espèces d’insectes herbivores et le type d’écosystème étudié. L’objectif principal de cette thèse vise à quantifier les effets de la structure du paysage sur la biodiversité des insectes herbivores et leur niveau d’herbivorie et d’évaluer leurs implications sur les services écosystémiques fournis par les forets en quatre étapes. 1) Le second chapitre de cette thèse examine les liens entre structure du paysage, herbivorie et les services écosystémiques avec une revue semi-quantitative de la littérature. Mes résultats montrent que l’herbivorie joue un rôle important dans la médiation des effets de la connectivité du paysage sur les services écosystémiques. Identifier les mécanismes régulant la réponse des insectes herbivores aux changements de structure du paysage permet de mieux prédire ces processus. 2) Dans le troisième chapitre, j’ai quantifié la relation entre structure du paysage et herbivorie et évalué les mécanismes potentiels affectant cette relation. Mes résultats montrent que même si la pression de prédation par les vertébrés sur les herbivores change de façon significative entre différentes structures de paysage, la structure du paysage n’est pas la seule variable déterminant le niveau d’herbivorie des insectes. La prochaine étape a donc consisté à déterminer si le niveau d’herbivorie des insectes varie à une échelle spatiale plus fine. 3) Dans mon quatrième chapitre, j’ai quantifié l’hétérogénéité spatiale de l’herbivorie des insectes au sein de parcelles forestières. J’ai ainsi mesuré le niveau de dommages causé par l’herbivorie sur les érables à sucre en comparant la lisière, l’intérieur et la canopée des arbres au sein de parcelles de forêt de différentes tailles et plus ou moins connectées. Les résultats révèlent que le niveau de connectivité entre parcelles de forêt et l’organisation spatiale à l’intérieur de la parcelle affectent le niveau d’herbivorie. 4) Finalement, afin de mieux comprendre les mécanismes causant les changements d’herbivorie à fine échelle, j’ai mesuré la diversité taxonomique et fonctionnelle des arthropodes et comparé ces dernières entre la lisière, l’intérieur des parcelles et la canopée. Les résultats montrent que la canopée des forêts fragmentées est une importante source de diversité chez les arthropodes. Les activités humaines, comme la fragmentation ou la restauration d’habitats, continuent de modifier la structure des écosystèmes forestiers, avec peut d’indications sur les conséquences sur les services écosystémiques fournis par les forêts. Cette thèse contribue grandement à une meilleure compréhension des effets de la structure du paysage sur les services écosystémiques en utilisant l’herbivorie comme modèle de recherche. Je dresse ainsi un cadre conceptuel avec lequel il serait possible d’équilibrer les coûts et bénéfices sociaux et environnementaux associés à l’altération de la structure du paysage
