While the structures of the solid and gaseous states of aggregation are fairly well understood, statements are frequently found in current physical chemical literature deploring the inadequacy of our present knowledge of the liquid state. Mathematical attempts to clarify the situation have been made recently with considerable success. Consequently, experimental data becomes doubly important in that it serves to test mathematical prediction, and forms a basis for further calculation, and in addition presents a clearer mental picture of the constitution of the liquid state.
