Ultrasmall gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) conjugated with cytotoxic drugs, such as doxorubicin (Dox), have been shown to be promising chemotherapeutic agents for overcoming multidrug resistance common in cancers. The particles improve drug solubility, while the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect improves targeting. The EPR effect results from the increased vascular permeability of cancerous or inflamed tissue, which causes particles of sizes less than 200 nm to accumulate preferentially in the pathological areas.
