Authors of systematic reviews generally analyze the pool of existing studies to generate a conclusion about the target parameter of interest. However, the precision of one's inference will be affected by additional studies yet to appear in the literature. Currently, there does not exist methodology for deciding at what point one's inference would not be substantially changed by additional studies. Stopping rules play a key role in the conduct of clinical trials. They are particularly useful for trials in which the treatment being studied may be detrimental to the subject's health or might appear significantly better than the existing treatment.
