In the visual system of Xenopus laevis, retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axons project to the optic tectum of the brain, forming a highly organized topographic map of visual space. Ephs and ephrins are chemoaffinity molecules that guide these RGC axons to the appropriate termination zones in the tectum. Using alkaline phosphatase fusion protein staining of whole mount brains, Ephs and ephrins were found to be expressed in the visual system of Xenopus throughout development. Ephrin-As were expressed in a high caudal/low rostral gradient, while EphBs were expressed in a high dorsomedial/low caudolateral gradient in early development that later shifted to uniform expression in mature animals.
