With several ongoing and upcoming dedicated asteroid missions, interest in the exploration of asteroids is increasing. As a number of asteroids occur in pairs, it is likely that future missions will include the exploration of binary asteroid systems.In the first part of the study, the relative motion of the binary asteroid system is modelled as the planar full two-body problem. First, the gravitational potential energy is expressed in terms of the system's parameters, which include the inertia properties of the bodies, such that their size, shape, and mass distribution are accounted for.
