A reproducible model utilizing the young pig for the study of the pulmonary effects of severe acute hemorrhage is presented. Several variables of pulmonary function were investigated in control, bled and bled-reinfused animals. Comparisons between and within the groups were made of minute ventilation, arterial and mixed venous blood gas tensions, systemic and pulmonary hemodynamics, screen filtration pressure of aortic and mixed venous blood, post-mortem pathology and lung water content.
