The four vitamin K-dependent clotting factors of the prothrombin complex (prothrombin, factor VII, IX and X) are adsorbed from plasma by barium sulfate. Does this adsorption depend on a common chemical configuration present in each of the factors, and is there any relation between such a configuration and vitamin K? A split product of prothrombin was isolated from rat serum by adsorption on barium sulfate. This product still reacted with an antibody specific against rat prothrombin, but showed different electrophoretic mobility. Rabbits were immunized with this split product; the antibody obtained reacted against the four factors of the prothrombin complex, but not against factor V.
