The diaphragm of the hypophysectomized rat was utilized in studies designed to further clarify the mode of action of growth hormone. The experiments indicate that bovine growth hormone (BGH) does not stimulate the intracellular accumulation of leucine or tyrosine while stimulating incorporation of these amino acids. After 60 min, BGH in vitro stimulates amino acid incorporation by cell debris, microsomes, and soluble protein. However, no effect is seen when subcellular particles are exposed to BGH directly. [...
