Born in Königsberg, East Prussia, in 1724, Immanuel Kant spent his whole life there, with the exception of a few years when he lived, as a private tutor, with an aristocratic country family not far from the city. His life was centred in the small but growingly important University of Königsberg, which he attended first as a student, and where he later became a "private docent", and eventually a full professor of logic and metaphysics. In the University and its environs Kant lived a life of diligent and brilliant scholarship, refusing proffered appointments and honours, and invitations to larger universities, in order to devote his whole energy to the lifework he set himself. He died at Königsberg in 1804, an old and greatly honored man. [.....
