The neurotrophin brain-derived neurotrophic factor participates in cell survival, differentiation, maintenance and neuronal plasticity using both retrograde and anterograde axonal mechanisms. Dopaminergic neurons of the midbrain express high levels of BDNF, which is thought to be transported anterogradely to the striatum. To determine the role played by BDNF in the adult nigrostriatal system, we induced BDNF knockdown in the substantia nigra of adult mice using Cre/loxP site-specific recombination.
