Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative pathology that leads to significant impairment of motor function. Medical as well as surgical treatments are available for PD. However, surgical treatment is offered after exhaustion of medical approaches or intolerance to medical treatment. Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS) is one method of surgical treatment that was introduced in the 1990s. STN-DBS results in marked alleviation of selected symptoms and signs associated with the motor disorder.
