For the cellist, these features include understanding the historical contextof the instrument and works, analysis of physical motion, as well as articulation, timbre,dynamics, choice of fingering and string, intonation, added ornaments, vibrato, and phraseshaping, each refined in performance. My research observes how contemporary solo cello workscan be performed in fresh and direct dialogue with music by Italian Baroque cellists.
