Although the products of the metabolism of the adrenal cortical steroids have not been definitely established, two groups of urinary substances are believed to be derived from the adrenocortical hormones. These are the cortically active material present in lipid extracts of urine and the urinary 17-ketosteroids. Almost nothing is known of the chemical nature, or of the adrenal precursors, of the urinary corticoids; and although the chemical identity of the 17-keto- steroids has been largely elucidated, their precursors are also unknown.
