Social experiences, both positive and negative, can profoundly influence subsequent social interactions. Zebra finches are highly gregarious songbirds and males and females of this species form long-term pair bonds. Moreover, female zebra finches can identify different males based solely on their song and, following successful pair-bonding, show strong preferences for the song of their mate over the song of an unfamiliar male.
