Polysaccharide Co-Polymerases (PCPs) comprise a large superfamily of proteins and are found in both Gram-negative and Gram-positive species. Members of this protein superfamily are involved in the export of a diverse set of glycans found on the bacterial surfaces and can be recognized by a characteristic topology where a large periplasm-exposed domain is anchored to the inner membrane by two transmembrane helices. Many PCP family members modulate the complex glycan biogenesis by imposing a given number of the repeat units on the growing polysaсcharide chain and as such are often referred to as the chain-length regulator proteins.
