Images from high resolution brain positron emission tomography (PET) scanners (CTI/Siemens HRRT) can measure differences in neuroreceptor concentrations in the gray matter that are related to cytoarchitectonic differences. However, the loss of resolution due to the PET imaging process results in partial-volume effects (PVE) that obscure the true radiotracer distribution. Although several partial-volume correction algorithms exist, these frequently require severely limiting assumptions. We developed a new iterative deconvolution algorithm for the partial-volume correction of PET images that aims to overcome the limitations of previous methods.
