There has been an explosion in our understanding of the intimate relationship between inflammation and cancer. One aspect of this relationship is the observed poor oncologic outcomes amongst patients having suffered infectious complications from surgery for their malignancy. Although little is known about the role of neutrophils in the metastatic cascade, they are the prime cellular effectors of the acute inflammatory response and heavily recruited to common metastatic sites such as the liver during states of acute inflammation. Our underlying hypothesis was that the combination of heavy neutrophil recruitment to liver sinusoids in the presence of circulating tumor cells would create a fertile ground for the seeds of metastasis.
