In the symbiotic association between S. meliloti and its plant host, the nutrient exchange from plant to bacteroid is in the form of C4-dicarboxylic acids such as malate. These compounds directly enter the TCA cycle and the derived energy is used for the nitrogen-fixation process. Malate dehydrogenase (mdh), the two subunits of succinyl-CoA synthetase (sucCD), and two of the three subunits of 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase (sucAB) are encoded as an operon with the order mdh-sucCDAB. The expression of this operon is controlled by a single promoter found directly upstream of mdh.
