Spatial patterns of diversity in the dominant northern fly family Scathophagidae (Diptera) were studied in northern Canada, as well as long-term changes in the body size of the common and widespread species Scathophaga furcata on a half-century time scale. Contemporary data was based on 2320 Scathophagidae collected during the 2010–2011 Northern Biodiversity Program and historical specimens were collected during the 1947–1962 Northern Insect Survey at twelve locations across the Northern Boreal, Subarctic, and Arctic ecoclimatic zones. Scathophagidae abundance increased with increasing latitude, and diversity was greatest at locations within the Subarctic ecozone.
