The prediction and control of the turbulent mixing of passive scalars is of particular interest to a variety of engineering fields. The present research aims to improve our incomplete understanding of this subject. In this regard, we study, by means of both experiments and numerical simulations, the evolution of a passive scalar (temperature) injected in a highly anisotropic manner at small scales into an inhomogeneous turbulent flow. The source of the scalar consists of a fine heated wire placed in the flow, generating a thermal plume downstream.
