Background Studies in acute and chronic post-stroke recovery suggest that both microstructural and molecular changes in stroke-affected fibre tracts are associated with clinical outcome. These processes can be measured noninvasily in the living human brain using Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET), and together these neuroimaging techniques provide a detailed multimodal approach to the assessment of post-stroke neuroplasticity.
