Free surface vortices at low-head hydropower intakes can harm plant performance or cause premature failure of mechanical components by inducing unsteady or non-uniform flow or by entraining air, ice or floating debris down towards the turbines. Laboratory-scale physical modelling to assess vortex activity in proposed intakes is effective and remains the standard practice in industry, but it is costly and uncertainty remains as to how viscosity, turbulence and surface tension influence the translation of observed vortex characteristics from the laboratory model to the full-scale intake.
