There is a region of the upper atmosphere called the mesopause which currently excites much interest. This region lies approximately between the altitudes of 80 and 90 kilometers. Today, knowledge of conditions in this region is necessary to predict satellite orbit decay, but academic interest lies in the attempt to set up a consistent model atmosphere (e.g. Bates and Nicolet (1)).
