Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are a group of industrially important chemicals that are incorporated into a wide variety of consumer products in order to increase their flame ignition resistance. These BFRs are readily released into the immediate environment through a multitude of routes, whereupon an appreciable level can be detected in household dust. The ingestion of contaminated dust is the major source of exposure for humans. Rising body burdens of BFRs over the last decades have led to major concern because of the persistence of BFR in the environment, their bioaccumlative and lipophilic properties, and their implication as endocrine disruptors.
