This study examines the elements of the water balance of a small catchment near Riobamba in the Ecuadorian Andes, where Eucalyptus Globulus was introduced in 1865. The study location is a 30-ha eucalyptus plantation into which 0.35-ha of acacias –Acacia Macracantha- were planted in 2003. A primary forest located 20km away at the same altitude was also studied for comparison purposes. The infiltration rates, moisture content and organic matter content were significantly lower in the eucalyptus forest, larger in the acacia patch and vastly superior in the primary forest.
