Structural failure due to earthquakes poses a serious threat to the life safety of Canadians. This threat is greater in existing structures than in new structures due to advancements in the understanding of seismology and structural design that have recently been incorporated into the relevant design codes and standards. This thesis documents an evaluation of the seismic vulnerabilities of existing single storey concentrically braced frame steel structures. Focusing on the brace and brace connections, brittle failure of the connection was identified as a key concern.
