The occurrence of extreme storms is a critical consideration in the design and management of a large number of water-resource projects. In current engineering practice, the estimation of extreme rainfalls is accomplished based on statistical frequency analysis of maximum precipitation data. The objective of this frequency analysis is hence to estimate the maximum amount of precipitation falling at a given point for a specified duration and return period. Results of precipitation frequency analysis are often summarized by "intensity-duration-frequency" (IDF) relationships for a given site.
