Cardiovascular diseases are one of the major causes of death, particularly in the Western world. The main cause of this mortality is myocardial infarction (MI) followed by congestive heart failure. Most of these patients undergo bypass surgery or angioplasty followed by stenting to improve blood supply and oxygenation. Although stents are excellent in providing clinical benefits, they have serious disadvantages resulting in limited biocompatibility, thrombosis, and in-stent restenosis (ISR).
