Despite the burgeoning acceptance of cultural and ethnic diversity present in U.S. educational institutions, the plight of the monolingual American continues to prevail. Although a relatively large number of American students succeed in achieving respectable grades in foreign language classes, few succeed in becoming proficient in a language other than English. Journalists and politicians alike have spoken out to offer diverse opinions on the reasons as to why this situation persists.
