A great number of processes tor the conversion of saline and brackish waters to usable water have been investigated recently. Among the various processes (4,5,8,17,23,25,27,42,53), membrane processes have become a widely investigated field. Of the membrane processes, electrodialysis is the most encouraging of those studied. A survey ot cost estimates (17,41) has shown that electrodialysis at the present stage ot development is able to convert brackish water at a coat of $0.40 per thousand gallons
