Interest in the sulphur content of soils stems from the fact that sulphur is an element essential for the growth of all plants. As a result of the studies of various early workers (2, 9, 17, 24) on the nutrient requirements of crops, it was realized that sulphur was needed in amounts of the same order as phosphorus by most crops. However, it was concluded that all normal soils, assisted by other natural sources, were well able to supply crop needs, and no investigations were initiated at that period into the nature of sulphur in soils.
