The purpose of this thesis is to trace the history and estimate the influence of the Orange Society, which flourished from the time of its founding in 1795 until its dissolution by the Duke of Cumberland in 1836. If one history, written by an Orangernen on the general history of the movement be excepted, this tapie has been untouched by historians. The part played by Orangemen in the Hebellion of 1798 is discussed by both Fraude and Lecky in their histories of 18th century Ireland. Fraude is entirely favourable to the Orangemen, while Lecky presents a series of excerpts from the Pelham MSS and the Rebellion Papers, permitting the reader to draw his own conclusions. [...
