Ionic liquids (ILs) have gained considerable research attention as potential replacements for volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) based solvents due to their low vapour pressures and ability to be easily recovered and recycled. Research on ILs has revealed such novel properties as: high chemical and thermal stabilities, good gas solubilites, wide windows of electrochemical stability, good electrical conductivities, high ionic mobilities and immiscibilities with some organic solvents and water. The exploitation of these IL properties has expanded the application scope to include: analytics, catalysis, electrochemistry, nanotechnology, synthesis and separations.
