The net ecosystem carbon (C) balance and radiative forcing impact of northern peatlands are largely governed by the exchange of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) gases with the atmosphere. To predict the effects of perturbations on peatland C exchange, the relationships between gas fluxes and environmental correlates should be established at the plant community and microtopographic level to capture the spatial heterogeneity of peatlands.
