Many populations seem adapted to their environment, through a match between their phenotype and habitat or resources. However, significant maladaptation is widespread, perhaps partly due to gene flow between populations, which prevents tracking a local optimum, by introducing alleles adapted to alternative conditions. Threespine stickleback show significant adaptive divergence over a variety of phenotypic traits, and the divergent lake-stream pairs of Vancouver Island illustrate the balance between selection and gene flow that exists in natural populations.
