Our aim is to establish and discuss a certain class of conditions on the functions fi which ensure that the system (E) has a unique solution through a given point of D. We conclude with a survey of the principal results in this field which were encountered in a study of the literature. Since these results are extremely scattered, the last resumé being that of Müller (7), it is felt that this is also of some value
