This thesis consists of theoretical investigations of the process of electron capture by ions passing through gases. Electron capture phenomena were first observed experimentally by Henderson in 1922. Apart from its intrinsic interest this phenomenon is of importance because the range of ions depends strongly on their charge. There is now a large quantity of experimental data on various data on various capture processes, much of which is summarized by Massey and Burhop
